You may have noticed the elegant parabolic curve at the edge of the porcelain plate? We abandoned the mechanical pressing process and instead used the traditional ‘Refining’ technique??craftsmen, following the turntable, use steel knives to ‘listen to the sound and shape’ the spinning clay body. The final result is a 3mm-thin body that, when the light strikes it, seems to be translucent jade.

A specially formulated underglaze pigment holds two secrets: the cobalt blue used for the blue-feathered phoenix originates from an ancient formula from the Western Regions, and after being fired in the kiln, it takes on a gem-like luster; the layers of peony petals stack up to seven, yet they retain Jingdezhen’s signature ‘sweet white’ porcelain base. As the morning light glances over the plate, the small bird perched on the branch seems ready to take flight at any moment.

To preserve the integrity of the journey across the ocean, we package the porcelain plate according to archaeological standards: the plate floats in a custom-made EPE shock-absorbing layer, and the black walnut stand is separately embedded in a velvet compartment.
